Transcribe Exhibition

Participatory Actions in Braga's Social Housing Estates

The "Transcribe" exhibition not only brought together the archive material and the historic/urban research related to Braga’s social housing estates, but it also made visible the entire process and results derived from the artistic and interventive practices developed with the residents.

The ‘Transcribe: Participatory Actions in Braga’s Social Housing Estates’ exhibition took place between March and April 2018 in Casa Esperança, Braga. It proposed transcribing a new story and make the socio-cultural realities of social housing estates of Braga and their communities visible. In this way, it not only brought together the archive material and the historic and urban research relating to Braga’s social housing estates, but also the entire process and results derived from the artistic and interventive practices developed over the course of a year (2017-2018) in situ with their inhabitants, such as: ‘Monuments of my Neighbourhood: Photography Workshop’; ‘Building my Neighbourhood: Collaborative Model-Making Workshop’; ‘Documenting my Neighbourhood: Video Workshop’; ‘Sounds of my Neighbourhood: Soundscape Workshop’; ‘You Tell Me: Roma Women’s Socio-Spatial Stories in Braga’s Social Housing Estates’ and ‘Transcribe Summer Lab 2017: Social-Spatial Practices in Braga’s Social Housing Estates.’ The exhibition intended to foster alternative interpretations and criticism towards the existing contemporary issues, not only of these specific Braga neighbourhoods, but also of others, with the aim of promoting questioning, dialogue, and debate about the the current urban decision-making policies, the social management and action methodologies, and the ethnic and social integration initiatives.

The forum was an event included in the programme of the exhibition, which took place on 28 April 2018. Several stakeholders for Braga’s social housing estates were invited to this forum—residents, representatives from both local associations and the residents’ committee, BragaHabit, and the city council— to gather around a table assembled in center of the exhbition, to debate, informally, the problems inherent in each one of these estates. This forum was moderated by Space Transcribers and structured according to five questions previously delineated by this group.
