PLACE / DISPLACE
Maia Bienal of Contemporary Art ‘19
Place/Displace proposes to make visible and foster a more profound debate on multiple scale issues applied to concepts of consumption, value, exchange, displacement, spatial and temporal movements.
Markets are and have always been an integral part of the contemporary city. More or less informal, markets are places of encounter, exhibition and exchange. They are spaces of a volatile and temporary nature, assembled and disassembled, bringing together the sale of products and objects, placed in or displaced, from places where they are implanted. On the one hand, these objects are placed in markets to be displayed and sold to a specific local customer. On the other, these objects are often displaced from their origin or geographical origins of production. In the interstice between placing and displacing the market's objects, narratives and socio-spatial relationships are hidden or unknown.
As a response to the Biennial's curatorial team's invitation, we produced the project Place/Displace, an installation suggested directly by the program - the market - and by the specific site of intervention - the square. The installation is structured around a set of exposed objects negotiated, bought and sent, from different geographical points of the globe to the exhibition space.
Over two months, three activities were developed parallel to the exhibition: (Un)Weaving the Market Stories; Weaving the Market Geographies; and Debate and Auction in the Market. The activities were used as performative and pedagogic acts. They aimed to incite debate on issues related to the exchange, consumption and displacement of objects.
